Acutance
6. A fragment of oversharpened shot. Camera Model Name - Fuji S2 pro. Sensitivity 100 ACA. Camera lens Nikkor 17-55/2,8. Exposure 1/60 sec. Aperture value – 9,5. 2. Intellectual sharpening, peculiar to some special plug-ins and smart sharpen filter which neatly raises acutance in the parts of the image where there are contrasting details and sets aside plain, monotonous zones of the shot. For example, walls, sky, asphalt. Competent use of this technique yields a remarkable result. 3. Local dosed application of sharpen tool brush allows to effect only those parts of the image which seem important for the photographer. 4. Application of any of these tools in backup layer and subsequent deletion of upper layer allows to achieve the desirable acutance. After application of sharp family filters the image structure becomes non-homogeneous. Untrained viewer may not catch site of it but specialist or trained amateur photographer will certainly notice light outline, presence or absence of grains extrinsic to the picture, which can appear in some parts of the image and disappear in others, and then arise again in different size. Is it possible to deceive a particular viewer? Is it possible to hide corrective work? It turns out to be possible. This can be done by means of the same almighty Photoshop. The easiest way is to pose a digital picture as a film one. For that purpose there is a Grain Surgery 2 plug-in for Photoshop. This wonderful program lets slightly blur the structure of original grain and picture a new one over it. Moreover, the program allows choosing the film type you want to imitate, grain size, degree of filter effect in light, medium and dark zones of the image. Grain, pictured with the help of this program, looks even more convincing than original film one. The circle is locked. Habits are handcuffs of freedom. Struggle for acutance by digital means has resulted in customary photographic acutance imitation (See photo 6).

6. “The Hermitage Garden” from series “Moscow for kisses”. Camera Model Name - Nikon coolpix 5000. Sensitivity 100 ACA. Exposure 1/60 sec. Aperture value – 5,6. Skill to obtain pictures with high acutance sometimes turns into an end in itself and object of proud of some photographers. It seems quite funny to onlookers. - Look, - says one photographer to another with shining eyes, - each hair can be seen and even scratches on the hair! - Yes, - answers the other, - a good camera lens. Yesterday I bought such a Sigma for macro shooting! It is great! These lads are not interested in any other values of photographs. They have reached the crest. They can count every brick in a high-rise building wall. Let’s be glad for their sake: everybody has its own values.
