How to shoot objects.
TEXTURE REVELATION One of the main tasks when shooting still life is the surface texture revealing. If the object is not smooth, the texture revelation depends fully on the angle of falling drawing light rays. The smaller is the angle the longer are the shadows thrown by the relief on the object surface. It’s easy to change the angle of lighting by altering the elevation of the object over the table, and the drawing light intensity is controlled by means of increase of the distance to the illuminated section. You can easily obtain necessary depth of the shadows produced by the sliding light with the help of reflectors. It’s important to provide sharpness of every cloth hair and every fibre on wood surface for proper texture exposure. Good optics and deep aperturing will be of assistance here (See photo 10, 11, 12).

These pictures are united by the fact that in both cases the source of drawing light is intentionally placed in a low position. The light slides over the object surface and produces long, deep shadows. They accentuate every protuberance or hole. In both cases I used a small light disk for brightening the shadows. Camera - Nikon coolpix 5000. Sensitivity 100 ASA. Exposure 1/15 sec. Aperture 7,6.
